Thenextmorningcame,andwewereexhaustedandscaredbutstill,wepushedon.Webegangatheringdrywoodandmadeafire.Werationedourfoodanddrankwaterfromnearbystreams.Ourattemptsatsignallingforhelpfailedaswesawnosignofcivilization.Buthopecamefromanunlikelysource.Weencounteredashelterbuiltbyafellowhikerwhohadgivenupbeforeus.Therewasnothinginsidetheshelter,butitwasapromisingsignthatwewerenottheonlyonesinthearea,andtherecouldbeothertrailsorpossiblyawayout.Thisdiscoveryupliftedourspirits,andwedecidedtoexplorefurther.Luckilyenough,westumbleduponanoldabandonedtrail,whichledustoafamiliarpathwerecognized.Afterhoursofwalking,wefinallymadeitoutofthewoods.Thepiercinglightofthesunstungoureyes,butthefeelingofreliefandhappinessoverwhelmedus.Wehadmadeitbacktocivilization,andwenevertooklifeforgrantedagain.
Overall,gettinglostinthewildernesswasathrillingandscaryexperience.Ittaughtustheimportanceofproperplanningandequipment,survivalskills,andthenever-give-upattitude.Althoughwecouldhaveeasilybeenhurt,wemadeitbackhome,andtheadventureleftuswithanewfoundappreciationofthegreatoutdoors.
